Abstract Dissolution of tricalcium silicate is strongly accelerated in a La salt solution and releases the amounts of OH, Ca and silicate ions just required to precipitate all of lanthanum at pH 8. It remained to be proved that (1) La silicate hydrate could form at pH 8, and (2) Ca silicate hydrate could not precipitate simultaneously. International audience; Viscometric constants were used to provide information on solute-solvent interactions in ternary water-sugar-salt solutions. Comparison was made between pure water and aqueous salt solution as solvents affecting the behaviour of small carbohydrates. The determination of intrinsic viscosity was made more accurate by applying triple extrapolation of the three equations (Huggins. Kramer and Meffroy-Biget). Results obtained with this triple extrapolation method were compared to that obtained with the Jones-Dole equation usually used. Multidrug resistance (MDR) mediated by ATP binding cassette subfamily B member 1 (ABCB1) is significantly hindering effective cancer chemotherapy. However, currently, no ABCB1-inhibitory drugs have been approved to treat MDR cancer clinically, mainly due to the inhibitor specificity, toxicity, and drug interactions. Elastic properties of DNA linked flexible magnetic filaments.

Elastic properties of magnetic filaments linked by DNA in solutions of univalent and bivalent salts with different pH values are investigated through their deformation in an external field. A strong dependence of the bending modulus in bivalent salt solution on the pH is shown. Experimental results are interpreted on the basis of the magnetic elastica.
How to apply the Kirkwood–Buff theory to individual species in salt solutions

It is generally assumed that the Kirkwood–Buff (KB) theory cannot be applied to anions and cations individually in a solution, as one cannot simulate this system in an open ensemble due to the electroneutrality constraint. By applying our recently derived KB theory for closed systems, we show that one does have access to single-ion properties in Molecular Dynamics. Our findings are supported by simulations for a model of a salt solution in which particles interact with WCA potentials, as well as for the NaCl/water system using the Particle Mesh Ewald technique for electrostatics.
Effects of ions on water structure: a low-field (1) H T1 NMR relaxometry approach

Aqueous salt solutions play an important role in nature because of their effects on environmental biogeochemical processes and on structural properties of biomolecules. Upon dissolution, salts split in ions that are solvated. Water in hydration shells is subjected to molecular motions that can be monitored by (1) H T1 NMR relaxometry. This technique allowed the evaluation of the nature of the interactions between water and ions via variable temperature experiments. Examination of relaxometry properties of aqueous solutions at variable salt concentrations allowed acknowledgement of the role played by ions in either structuring or destructuring water aggregates. Effects of intraocular cefotaxime on the human corneal endothelium

Abstract Purpose To ascertain whether 0.4 mL of cefotaxime 0.25% applied intracamerally causes toxic alteration of the human corneal endothelium. Methods In this prospective randomized masked study, 66 patients had cataract extraction using phacoemulsification, a frown incision, and implantation of a poly(methyl methacrylate) intraocular lens. This was followed by intraocular injection of 0.4 mL of cefotaxime 0.25% or balanced salt solution (BSS®). Contact specular microscopy and photography were performed preoperatively and 1 to 4 days and 3 months postoperatively.
